SDC Broadcasting

The Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire was the largest and most destructive wildfire in recorded history in New Mexico, burning from April until June in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. SDC Broadcasting helped State Forestry, police and other emergency resources get vital and time-sensitive information to residents of Las Vegas. The staff at stations worked tirelessly, round-the-clock answering calls from concerned listeners, broadcasting live updates from incident command posts, and providing information regarding evacuation orders, road closures and safety procedures. Some areas impacted by the fire had no electricity or internet service. So every morning at 10 a.m., when the Public Information Officer called in for live update, people would go to their vehicles and listen to the most up-to-date information. It became part of their daily routine in this time of uncertainty and danger and for some, total devastation.
