Bruce Gilbert has broadcasting blood that runs through his entire immediate family. His father, Gary Voss, has been in the radio business since 1963 as a news reporter, anchor, on-air talent, play by play announcer, sales, management and radio station owner. Gary currently serves as a sales consultant for a small market operator in Paxton, IL.
Gilbert’s brother, Mike Thomas, is the Market Manager of Audacy’s Boston cluster of radio properties. Thomas’ distinguished career includes the launching and subsequent success of one of the great sports radio brands in America, 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston and leading Good Karma’s ESPN 1000, Chicago through the pandemic.
Gilbert’s sister, Becky Peutz, hosts the afternoon drive show on Classic Rock WIQI Watseka, IL and the morning show on WPXN, Paxton, IL.
Since his first steps as a toddler, Gilbert has been hanging out at radio stations. His first official job in the business was as a board operator for Broome Duster’s hockey games on 1290 WNBF, Binghamton, NY in 1977 at the age of 14. In the subsequent years Bruce has been blessed to work in all facets of programming, sales, network programming, play-by-play and new media.
Gilbert has led programming and operations at KBIU, Lake Charles, LA; WTAW and KTSR, College Station, TX; WVAF, Charleston, WV; WTAE/WVTY, Pittsburgh, PA; and KTCK, KDBN, KLIF and KPLX, Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. In 2003 he was named the General Manager of the ESPN Radio Network where he oversaw all programming, affiliation and sales for the network and worked with the owned and operated ESPN Radio stations.
In 2007, Gilbert was offered a very unique and entrepreneurial opportunity to become the Chief Executive Officer of Dan Snyder’s radio group; Red Zebra Broadcasting based in Washington, DC. Gilbert grew Red Zebra to thirteen stations before having to downsize the company and successfully guide it through the economic recession in 2008 and 2009.
Gilbert returned to Dallas in 2010 when he was named Vice President of News, Talk and Sports Programming for CBS Radio Dallas with oversight of Newsradio 1080 KRLD, 105.3 The Fan and the Texas State Network.
In 2013, Gilbert accepted the newly created position of VP of Sports for iHeart Media where he had oversight of the Fox Sports Radio Network and assisted the iHeart Media sports radio stations across the country.
Gilbert was recruited to join Cumulus Media as SVP of Sports for Cumulus and Westwood One in January 2015. In his current role, Gilbert has oversight of all Westwood One Sports Play-by-Play, managing relationships with partners like the NFL and NCAA. He also collaborates with partners at Audacy on the CBS Sports Radio Network and assists programmers, talent, and management at the 50 plus Cumulus all sports stations across the country. Gilbert recently added oversight of content across several Cumulus clusters including San Francisco, Des Moines, Birmingham, and Columbia/Jefferson City, Missouri to name a few.
Gilbert was named Sports Radio Program Director of the year on three different occasions during his tenure at KTCK and ESPN. He has been recognized in Radio Ink’s annual list of top programmers. Gilbert also received the coveted Andrew Ashwood Award, honoring the broadcaster that has made the most positive impact in the radio business.
In addition to radio, Gilbert’s passions include The Chicago Cubs, the Pittsburgh Steelers and The Pittsburgh Penguins. He also enjoys working out, tennis, golf and listening to country and pop music.
Gilbert is married to the former Amy Williams, an SMU graduate, former record industry professional, media affiliations manager and current artist and proprietor of Glassaxes.com. Amy makes beautiful glass sculptures using acoustic and electric guitars as her canvas. Bruce and Amy live in the Lake Highlands neighborhood of Dallas with their fourteen-year-old son, Hudson. Hudson is a straight A student at St. Monica Middle school and aspires to attend Jesuit High School in the fall. Bruce, Amy and Hudson have one dog, Wrigley a German Shepard/Chow rescue and one cat, Mickey. Gilbert has two adult daughters (Danielle and Amber) and two adult Step Sons (Michael & Jason) from his previous marriage.
